little Bavaria – Leavenworth, WA

One thing that I feel like I should write about on a grey day off the hill like this, is the town we are staying in. Leavenworth, WA was a dying ghost town in the 60s when two newly moved in entrepeneurs decided to give it a Bavarian theme, in order to attract tourists. The idea was called foolish and naive at first, but ended up saving the town. All buildings within city limits have been remodeled to look like they were brought straight from Austria (edit – southern germany), and new names to hotels and restaurants have been given, such as “Sandy’s Waffle & Dinner Haus”, and “Die Innsbrucker Hotel”. I guess it’s all worked out pretty well, Leavenworth now has about a million visitors a year, not only there for the skiing 45 minutes up the pass, but also for pretending theyre in Europe.

In other news, we are having an off day due to windy and rain/snow conditions up in the pass. Gus Kenworthy got in last night, so now we’re just waiting for Russ who is getting in on Monday. Yesterday I managed to slam my knee into a rail pretty hard, so I’m not sure how good it will be to ski on it tomorrow. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Stay tuned

  1. Bavaria is definatly not in Austria!!??

  2. okay, sorry. what i meant to say is that the village reminds me of southern germany/austria/switzerland. because of its architechture, and theme.

  3. haha, marlon, i wanted to say the same ;) But i guess for foreigners, it’s all the same ;) Lederhose, Bier und Brezel ;)

  4. Thank you for taking the time to photograph some of our endearing accomplishments as a community. Rudloof’s pizza, Kristall’s Restaurant, and the Leavenworth Properties building to name but a few. George Wagner, the gentleman dressed in Trachten, is a beloved fixture of our Village and displays the pride with which we adhere to our Bavarian thematic. We appreciate the attention you have shown to our hard work and welcome you to our home – truly – with a southern (Bayrisch) hospitality. Lederhosen, Bier und Bretz’n – Jawoll!
