The company will operate Volant out of its Gen-X headquarters, home of its Limited and Lamar snowboard brands, as well as the Tommy Armour and TearDrop golf lines. Volant skis will be produced overseas by other ski companies starting next season. That marks the end of the line for the North-American production.“Our core competency is marketing and distribution,” said John Collins, President of Gen-X Sports. “We’ve acquired a brand with great equity that has frankly had difficulties bringing more cost-effective technology to the marketplace. We think with some of the pending technology Volant has, we can find a strong partner to produce the brand.”Volant has been searching for a new investor or buyer for several months now since company Chairman and Apple Computers co-founder Mike Markkula announced his intention to recoup some of his investment in the brand. The company closed its factory in mid-August, later shutting the factory when a buyer didn’t emerge in time to continue production. Volant has shipped a little less than 90 percent of its preseason orders, with no plans to build for reorder this season.“We have talked to dozens of people, but this really was the first reasonable offer that came to the table,” Volant President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Soderberg said Wednesday from the company’s Wheat Ridge, Colo. “These guys were ready to act. They’re an aggressive company that’s willing to make decisions.”Soderberg said he and the remaining executive and factory staff plan work on the transition of the brand until mid-October before leaving the company. Gen-X has said they would like to keep the Volant rep force intact and are also interviewing the company’s sales and marketing team.“We were already far down the path with new technology that brings some cosmetic benefits to the product, but also doesn’t require the use of such complicated and very expensive production,” said Soderberg.Collins said his intention is to build a more cost-effective ski.“Price value can only take you so long,” said Collins. “You have to build equity in the brand. We think these guys had a pretty good game plan. We’ve got some pretty good tools in the toolbox here and just have to make sure we’re working with the right people to use them.” Volants have already found their way into big box stores and mass merchandisers throughout Canada as of late fall.(© 2001 Media, Inc).</p></blockquote><p></p>
