Thanx for testing our application (avalanche buddy). I'd like as one of the developers, to comment on some aspects.
The thing with testing in urban area when our application was "disturbed" (interference is something else) by other wifi spots, is actually by design. The test was like testing a common beacon in an area where 25 beacons are set to send. Any beacon receives in that case a lot of information. Which it should, because it should locate networks. The strong point is that it can separate signals.
As suggested in the article we should turn the selecting proces around. We though, experienced it our way most easy, it takes just a few rounds to get used to it. Then i'm safe to say anyone will experience it as easy as well. We state also that our application is only workable when the user has trained. Just like one antenna beacons. But we're not deaf for suggestions. We will discuss your input about signal selecting and will change it when we think it's better. Originally it was actually like that.
Using our system, or any a beacon in general without any practice, always gives some worse results than its potential. You have to train with it: it works differently. To improve the reaction speed we currenty work with using a certain filter technique, to improve it. But please consider that a common beacon don't react instantly as well. It's a pitty that the cm-er accuracy is not mentioned, as it is one of its strong points.
We tested our phones in the cold and heat according to some other ETSI rules it just missed with 10 minutes the extreme temperatures target. What it showed us is that smartphones, at least ours, are capable of functioning in extreme cold (-20C, 5 hours). More important is that phones are not subjected to cold that much when wearing close to your body: the temperature never drops 0C. Only when searching. A telephone needs at least 20-30min to drop below 0C when exposed in -20C.
I hope next time you will involve common beacons as well as reference. With that we already showed and convinced some international mountain guides the capability of our system.
That some other authorities and institutes are searching for sollutions as well i see it as a big step forward. If anyone has some ideas please just write me. Your suggestions helps the developement.
