I work as sustainability designer and i think that The most unsustainable aspect of skiing is transportation, are not the slopes, but the skiers, a machine can consume 50L of diesel hour as u say, or it can be electric and do it in Kwh so it will be great, but you have to divide this among all the skiers in the station, to see what it is equivalent to divide it for 2000 skiers?.... The real problem is in ski vacations and especially air transport, going skiing by plane consumes 4L per second, the same happens in a car with a consume of + - 8L/100km. (*UE Inphography) and these emissions are distributed among much fewer people than those in a ski resort. If there are 2000 skiers who have come by car driving among 50 km = 8000L of gasoil/diesel
I totally agree that the resorts must seek sustainable solutions to the current problem, in the same way, sports brands must stop using chemicals for waxes and other maintenance products of 1 use, that are made of plastic.... just as they should build the ski with recyclable materials and all the things that you all argued before.
But above all we must think about what we do to contribute to it, if we don't see a change in everyone's mentality and especially in actions, it is a bit of a hypocrat to ask others to do it for you. So let's try to make our sport and our actions a little more sustainable, use the railway, share transports, go mountain skiing/freetouring, and try to buy and give benefits to sustainable brands of our sport, which exist, especially in waxes, or in companies like WNDR which is from the USA, or all the brands of artisan skis in Europe (they do not use macro-production, so their CO2 consumption is much lower and they tend to use closer and also more sustainable materials in comparison) these are good examples of where you should go our sport.
I think that what we neeed is to SHARE AND TO ANOUNCE to every skier, all the sustainable options to take to be more sustainable. we can start making a list of Real Sustainable brands inthe ski industry,or making a top of the most in every sector, skis, manteinance, poles, texile, ski stations.... etc
I will make a new Forum to share this.
