About Morrow Snowboards
Morrow Snowboards is a manufacturer of boards, bindings and boots. It is a recognizable name for those who have been riding for a while as it was a popular and quality brand in the early and mid 1990s. It has since declined, been bought out and revamped into a inexpensive brand aimed at beginners. Here's a look at the company, its history and its snowboard gear.
History
Morrow was founded in 1989 by Rob Morrow, who was a Junior World Snowboard Champion, and his cousin Neil Morrow, who was attending engineering school at the time. Both were only 19 years old when they started the company. They began ripping snowboards apart to see how improvements could be made to standard design and started experimenting with new materials and construction. Throughout the next decade, Morrow came out with a variety of boards that introduced functional new technology to the snowboarding world--deep sidecuts, wide board design and Carbon Fiber Torsion box construction, to name a few.
Time Frame
Morrow was particularly popular in the early and mid 1990's and stood among big names in snowboarding like Burton and Nitro. In 1995, the company went public. In the late '90s, sales began to decline and in 1999, Morrow was sold to K2, which still owns the company today. Production moved from Oregon to K2's Washington facility.
Identification
Today, while K2 continues to manufacture and sell boards under the Morrow name, Morrow has fallen from its renowned place in the market and now designs more inexpensive boards aimed at beginners and novices. K2's own line of snowboards are its more quality performance boards aimed at the full spectrum of riders.
Types
Morrow's snowboard line deviates from the common snowboard designations of freestyle and freeride,\ and is instead divided accordingly: Men's Directional, Men's Sidewall, Men's Team, Women's Directional and Women's Sidewall. They also have several kids boards. The Directional snowboards are essentially all-mountain boards designed for a versatile ride, while the Sidewall is more all mountain/freestyle. Men's Team consists of two boards, the Hemisphere for powder riding and the Twin. The line includes 18 snowboards altogether.
Considerations
In addition to snowboards, Morrow also offers a full line of bindings and boots, although, for some strange reason, they call their bindings "binders." They have 7 binders in Kid's, Men's and Women's lines. All binders are basic, inexpensive strap bindings. They also have 7 boots in the same lines.
