Hey,

I am going on exchange in the fall semester at Umeå University. I would like to hear do's and don't's.

I am planing to get as much skiing, sport, and a little studying done in the period. Since I am out of Copenhagen, where we don't have that many outdoor opportunities I am looking for classes in backcountry, avalanche, climbing and alike. I am not looking for beginner classes but hopefully something which gives me a paper, if possible at all and where to look for these?

If any of you are studing at Umeå what should I be aware off, where is the best dormatory, best sport to sign up for I can see that there is quite many options at campus, what are the prices on beers, should I bring my own from copenhagen etc.

I have an appartment in Copenhagen for rent in the same period. Aug. to Jan so if interested please let me know.

Hi!
I've lived in Umeå for four years now and the main reason when I moved here was the skiing. But it turned out that it is at least 300km to the nearest resort that can be seen as a good one. The nearest are Kittelfjäll, Hemavan-Tärnaby and Borgafjäll, if you want to go further you have 360km to Östersund, and from there it's about 100km to Åre or Vemdalen. But if you're really interested you have to join IKSU, the students sportsclub. The have branches in all sorts of sports as skiing and climbing, IKSU Alpin arranges trips to the Swedish alps a couple of times every semester with both ordinary skiing trips and backcountryexpeditions. If you're more in to bigjumps we have a small slope and a bigjump not far from the university.

And as moijn said, bring beer...

Hey,

Thanks for the quick replies. I am heading up there in mid August. Trying to get some hiking done for a week before heading to school. I am aware that there might be some long distances to the resorts. I am willing to hike for turns, is that possible en the surrounding areas or will it only be cross-country skiing.

I am aware of the IKSU that was partly why I decided to go to Umeå. So I can see as I expected that I have to bring lots of beers. Can any of you recommend where to live at campus I have the possibility of chosing and would like to live the best place.

I live in Umeå, and I have lived here my whole life and what I know is that there are no mountains here for skiing and second of all the closest slope is at Bräntberget and it is maybe 50-100 meters "long" (we got a "bigjump" 10 meters long but there are plan's on a funpark at winter and a 4x mountainbike slope at summer. So I can strongly recommend you to not come to Umeå for skiing.

Where to live? Berghem would be my first choice and Tunnelbacken my second.

But, as mentioned earlier, Umeå is a really bad place for downhill skiing (but good for cross-country skiing). Östersund is a lot better if you want to go downhill skiing (and the town with its surroundings is a lot nicer, but the university is a joke compared to the university in Umeå).

Where to live?

If you want to live close to the school you should search for apartments in Nydalahöjd, Ålidhem, Ålidhöjd, Berghem or Mariehem.

Visit www.bostaden.umea.se and put yourself in a queue for apartments, it's in swedish but if you're danish you'll probably get the drift
