It is mid-October and the snow has fallen on several locations on the northern hemisphere. Pictures and videos of the first turns are being spread all over various social media platforms and we are all longing to put our ski boots and goggles on. I managed to stop two of today’s best freeskiiers for a short interview in Santa Barbara on their way from Los Angeles to Lake Tahoe. Reine Barkered, from Sweden, and Jackie Paaso, from the United States, have been preparing for the upcoming winter season with a lot of biking and unusual high summer temperatures in Sweden. Barkered, who is from the northwestern part of Sweden where the summer climate is not always what a summer climate should be. Snow in early June is something to be prepared for and the days on the beach by the lake are usually easy to count. But this year has been different he explains with a great smile:
Paaso has been traveling back and forth between the US and Sweden competing in a few UCI Mountain Bike events but unfortunately she injured her wrist before the event in Mont-Sainte-Anne and has been off the bike for a couple of months.
As they are spending their last days of summer on a pier in Southern California, also called the American Riviera, they are both very hopeful for the upcoming season. One of the things that they look forward to is that the tour has for the first time a stop in Alaska.
“I’m hoping this to be one of the best seasons I’ve had in the last couple of years”. – Paaso
“I think we had the best summer in about 100 years. Temperatures up about 25°C to 30°C and no rain”. – Barkered
“A week before Mont –Sainte-Anne I got injured so my trip back to the US turned in to more family time and less biking”. – Paaso
“I expect everything to go really well this season”. – Barkered
